The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is seeking highly motivated and outstanding individuals, with a strong interest in qualitative research, to join our two-week long Qualitative Interviewer Training Programme. Preference will be given to candidates who are resident and a member of a homestead from within our Population Intervention Platform Study Area (PIPSA) whose boundaries are all the izigodi (villages) in Mpukunyoni Traditional Council except Khula, Dukuduku and Ezwenelisha. Candidates from the two izigodi, Nompondo and Ingodini, under Mdletsheni Traditional Council, are also eligible to apply.

Upon selection and successful completion of this training programme individuals will be equipped with minimum entry level skills suited to the position of an AHRI Qualitative Interviewer. An AHRI Qualitative Interviewer is responsible for data collection using various qualitative methods including observations, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews; compiling field notes and case summaries; transcribing audio recordings and translating scripts from isiZulu to English.

Minimum Selection Criteria for acceptance onto the Training Programme:

  1. An undergraduate degree in the field of Social Sciences.
  2. Experience in qualitative data collection using various methods including observations, focus group discussion or in-depth interviews;
  3. Experience in transcribing and translation of qualitative data from IsiZulu to English;
  4. Experience in a community-based or clinic-based study;
  5. Proficiency in English and isiZulu (verbal and written);
  6. Strong data entry skills using computer software packages;
  7. Knowledge of HIV, STIs, TB and other health issues;
  8. Be willing to work hard and in an independent and organised manner;
  9. A driver’s license is an advantage.
